“Your Voice Matters”

To the students of Charlotte-Mecklenburg: “Your voice matters.”

So Teach For America – Charlotte Executive Director Tim Hurley (Delta ’02) aptly summarized the theme of last Saturday’s Wake UP! Student Empowerment Summit. Tim was joined by other major leaders  in Charlotte’s education realm, including CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison, CMS Board of Education Chair Mary McCray,  North Carolina State Board of Education Member John Tate, and Johnson C. Smith University President Dr. Ronald Carter. The real guests of honor, however, were the 100+ local students who demonstrated true leadership in the presentations and conversations that they led. They shared about how they were making lasting impact at their schools and called on their peers and adult leaders to advocate for educational justice in Charlotte. As Vance High School  Senior and member of the Wake UP! Steering Committee Mona Zahir wrote in an editoral for The Charlotte Post, “Wake UP! gives students like me a voice in the movement for educational equality for all.” Read the full letter here.
